Description

Begin your adventure in the heart of Zanzibar’s only national park, Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park. Covering over 50 square kilometers, Jozani is home to rare and endangered species, the most famous being the Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey, found nowhere else in the world. Upon arrival, be welcomed by an experienced local guide who will lead you through a network of forest trails. As you walk under the shady canopy of mahogany, eucalyptus, and palm trees, learn about the forest’s ecological importance. Your guide will point out the rich flora, including medicinal plants used by locals for generations. Come across groups of playful Red Colobus monkeys jumping between branches or curiously watching visitors from the trees. Unlike other monkey species, the Red Colobus are quite friendly and used to human presence, making it easy to observe them up close and take memorable photographs. You may also spot Sykes monkeys, small antelopes like duikers, and a variety of birds and butterflies. A walk through the mangrove boardwalk at the edge of the forest is another highlight. The boardwalk takes you into a protected mangrove ecosystem where you’ll learn how these plants support marine life and protect coastal communities from erosion and storms. The fresh forest air, the birdsong, and the sounds of rustling leaves create a peaceful atmosphere that allows you to reconnect with nature. After the forest walk, continue with a short drive to a local Spice Farm, where you’ll begin the second chapter of your journey — the Spice Tour. Zanzibar is often referred to as the “Spice Island” due to its long history of growing and trading spices. This tour offers a hands-on experience that is both educational and aromatic. At the spice farm, a local farmer will take you on a guided walk through the plantations. See, touch, and smell a wide range of spices including cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, turmeric, cardamom, and black pepper. Learn how each spice is grown, harvested, and used — not only in cooking but also in traditional medicine and cosmetics. Along the way, your guide may challenge you to identify spices based on their scent or taste. You will also get a chance to taste fresh tropical fruits such as jackfruit, starfruit, passion fruit, mangoes, and bananas straight from the trees. Some farms even offer coconut tree climbing demonstrations and natural souvenirs made from palm leaves and spices. With your senses awakened by the spices, the tour then takes a delicious turn a hands-on Zanzibari cooking class where you’ll learn to prepare an authentic Swahili meal using the spices and ingredients you’ve just discovered.
