Aritsans at Tinga Tinga Arts Cooperative Society produce the popular and unique art style known as Tinga Tinga paintings, predominantly portraying the rich culture and tradition of Tanzania.
Established in 1968 by Edward Tingatinga, the Tanzanian artistan to first produce these vibrant paintings which became popular amoung Tanzanian expatriates. Edward Tingatinga died in 1972, leaving behind a continued art style legacy when in 1990 the family of Edward registered Tinga Tinga Arts Cooperative Society (TACS). TACS produce popular art products under the trade name Tinga Tinga™ and provide livelihoods for a myriad of painters.
Modern Tingatinga uses enamel paints on canvas incorporating bold, colourful and humorous designs with detailed compositions. TACS premises are located in Oysterbay, Masaki, in Dar es Salaam, where you can see the Tinga Tinga artisans at work. The main building accommodates both space for galleries and workshop.
TACS has been licensing its intelectual property worldwide for more than 20 years. Among its sub-licensees are BBC, Walt Disney, Penguin, Heye, FIFA and many others.
