Description
Begin your journey with a guided walking tour through Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander through narrow alleys rich in Swahili, Arab, and European architecture. Visit iconic landmarks like the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, the Freddie Mercury House, and the bustling Darajani Market. Learn about Zanzibar’s complex past, including its role in the East African slave trade.
Next, board a traditional boat to Prison Island (Changuu Island). Originally built as a detention center for rebellious slaves and later used as a quarantine station, this small island is now a sanctuary for the famous Aldabra giant tortoises, some over 150 years old. Spend time feeding the tortoises and taking photos. Enjoy the chance to swim or snorkel in the island’s turquoise waters.
After returning to the main island, travel to a local spice plantation. Walk through the aromatic fields and learn how Zanzibar’s famous spices like cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and cardamom are grown and harvested. Your guide will share stories of their culinary and medicinal uses. Enjoy an optional fruit tasting session and shop for organic spice products made locally.
