Mama Masai

Tanzania

As a Fair Trade Friend, Mama Masai produces traditional hand-made bead craft from the Masai Steppe in Tanzania. The products include table mats, coasters, wine glass charms, napkin rings, earrings, mirrors and Christmas ornaments. Mama Masai is a community-based project. Mama Masai is the name given to approximately two hundred women, divided into fifteen groups throughout Simanjiro, northern Tanzania who make beaded craft-ware enabling each women to be paid a fair price for everything she creates. The enterprise has grown steadily since 2000, and now enables the women to earn their own money for the first time in the history of their community.
