Summits Africa
Tanzania
Summits Africa is a East African based adventure outfitter providing professional outfitting solutions, specialising in mountain treks up Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru and Mt Kenya. Guides are fully trained in safety and first aid.
How they began:
Seven years in the making Summits Africa was created through the combined experience and vision of over 50 dedicated Kilimanjaro and trekking specialists from senior managers to porters. Most of the Summits Africa team have been working together since 2001 shaping the way they do business and that makes for a very dedicated and close knit team. It is that team is Summits Africa. Members start at the bottom and work up - after all if you have been a porter as a guide you can properly emphathise with their position and earn their respect.
Trips
ANY trip can run with a minimum 2 people and single travellers can join any set departure.
All trips can be booked through a travel agent or representative near you. New travel agents or tour operators contact us. Private trips can also be arranged through Summits Africa.
Summits runs climbs on all of Kilimanjaro's routes, including the Rongai, Umbwe and Marangu Routes. Generally they recommend either the Lemosho or Machame routes but there are instances where other routes are more suitable.
Mt Meru can be hiked as an acclimatisation option pre Kilimanjaro or as a standalone mountain. It's very pretty and often overshadowed by Kilimanjaro but comes highly recommended. A 4 day trip is listed but 3 days is possible for very fit hikers.
Mt Kenya has both technical and non technical hiking options. Non technical ascents of Point Lenana are perfect for hikers who would like to enjoy a stunning high altitude mountain. Technical ascents are a great introduction to technical hiking at high altitude. Summits provides hiking trips on all routes.
Challenge events are designed to raise money for a specific cause or set of causes. If you would like to set up a charity event involving one or more East African peaks or trekking / mountain biking, then please contact us.
SAFETY
At Summits Africa we take your safety extremely seriously. There are 3 essential components to the Summits Africa approach to keeping you safe on any one of our trips:
Training
The right tools for the job (oximeters, PAC, oxygen, stretchers, team work, customised constant monitoring system)
Communications & backup (sat phones, telephones, radios, evacuation teams, 24 hour backup, liaising with base team)
Communications & Backup
Depending on the trip different communications devices may be applicable. These days most areas in East Africa are covered by cell phone coverage but any trip that heads into areas that have black spots (even if they last for only one day), go with satellite phones. For adventure trips, hiking and mountain biking for instance, radio communications between teams are also included.
All trips have 1 specific manager at base assigned to them for reliable communications channels and all teams check-in twice daily.
All trips Summits Africa operate require that our clients take out flying doctors or emergency evacuation cover. Almost all trips, by default, have this cover built into the cost for no nonsense evacuation support in remote zones.
