Currency, Banking and Credit Cards
The Tanzanian shilling (Tsh or TZS), divided into 100 cents, is the national currency. Most major currencies and travellers cheques are accepted and can be converted at banks and foreign bureaux du change in main towns and tourist areas. The US dollar is the most popular currency accepted.
Banks are available at some airports and in all major towns, where foreign exchange can be converted.
Most banks have a 24 hour cash machine where international bank cards, mainly Visa and Mastercard, are accepted to draw Tanzanian shillings. Cash machines are not always readily available in some of the smaller towns.
|Monday to Friday||8:30am to 3:00pm|
|Saturday||8:30am to 1:30pm|
|Sundays and national public holidays||Closed|
Credit cards can be used at major tourist lodges, hotels and travel agents, but keep in mind that Visa and Mastercard are the cards most widely accepted. When eating out or shopping in the towns, visitors must note that most establishments do not accept credit cards. Visitors are advised to inform their bank that they will be travelling to Tanzania. Some banks may not know of Tanzania and will not approve card transactions without prior knowledge.
Travellers Cheques in US dollars and pounds sterling are recommended, but may be harder to exchange outside main cities. On cashing of travellers cheques, be prepared for a lower exchange rate due to bank charges.
