Highlights

  • Explore the dhow-building capital of Zanzibar on a tour of the north coast
  • Go to a turtle sanctuary in Nungwi and learn how the animals are nursed back to health
  • Try your hand at the unique craft of bending wood to make Zanzibar's famous dhow boats

Description

Depart Stone Town and drive to Nungwi, where freshly caught seafood is auctioned in the fish markets. Stop at the ruins of an old Portuguese settlement, and hear its history from your guide. Learn about the Portuguese conquest of Zanzibar in 1497. Continue to a blacksmith's, where the tools are still made using centuries-old methods. Try your hand at the unique craft of bending wood for the construction of Zanzibar's famous dhows (boats). Next, go to a turtle sanctuary and aquarium in Nungwi. Discover how ailing turtles are nursed back to health and released into the ocean. Take a tour of Nungwi village to see women dressed in kangas (traditional African wrap) and cooking over firewood as the children play. Walk down to the beach for an optional lunch at one of Nungwi’s popular restaurants, and enjoy some free time to sunbathe or swim and snorkel in the sea. Head to the northern tip of Zanzibar if you want to see one of the world's most beautiful sunsets. Watch the sky turn pink and gold as the sun sinks over the Indian Ocean. Sundowners and a late transfer back to your hotel can be arranged if you wish to stay and enjoy the sunset.
