DescriptionExplore Mtoni Palace, the 19th-century birthplace of Seyyida Salme, the youngest daughter of Sultan Seyyid Said. Discover the story of her remarkable life! Following her father's death in 1856, when she was just 12-years old, Salme took part in one brother's unsuccessful attempt to wrest the throne away from another. In a young life lived against the grain, the Arabian princess fled for Europe with a German merchant, having become pregnant with his son. Settling in Hamburg, she converted to Christianity, changed her name, married her lover, bore three more children, and was soon widowed. You'll also see Marahubi Palace, built by Salme's older brother, Sultan Barghash, whom she'd helped to escape from imprisonment after a failed coup against the rule of another sibling, Sultan Majid. From there you'll travel to Stone Town, and to the Palace Museum, which has a room dedicated to Salme's life and writings.
