Description
Rising proudly just south of Lake Natron, Ol Doinyo Lengai is revered by the Maasai and the Sonjo as the sacred “Mountain of God.” Unlike any other volcano on Earth, it erupts natrocarbonatite lava—a rare, fast-cooling lava that flows at lower temperatures (500–600 °C). In the sunlight, it shimmers black or brown before quickly hardening into pale, chalky rock, transforming the landscape into a stunning white, otherworldly scene.
Your Adventure Itinerary
Your journey begins early in the morning from Arusha or Karatu. From there, you can either unwind at the lodge/campsite or choose to spend the day exploring Lake Natron.
If you opt for Lake Natron activities, your day unfolds with a guided walk alongside a Maasai guide, who will share stories of the land’s ecological wonders and deep cultural significance. Along the lake’s shores, you’ll witness thousands of flamingos painting the waters pink, while giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests roam nearby.
Next, step back in time at an archaeological site where footprints have been preserved in volcanic ash for thousands of years. Afterwards, hike for an hour through scenic terrain to a refreshing waterfall, the perfect spot for a swim and a cool break from the sun, before returning to your lodge or campsite.
The Midnight Ascent
After resting, the real adventure begins around 11:00 p.m. You’ll travel to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai, where your overnight trek starts at midnight. The challenging climb (5–6 hours) is steep and suited to experienced, fit hikers—but the reward is unforgettable.
As dawn breaks, you’ll arrive at the summit in time for sunrise, greeted by breathtaking views of the crater. On active days, you may even see molten black lava spilling dramatically from its crust—a sight unlike anywhere else on Earth.
The descent takes 3–4 hours, after which you’ll return to the campsite to rest and recharge before heading back to Arusha or Karatu.
