Prison Island (Changuu Island), Zanzibar
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a historic island located about 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Just a 25–30-minute boat ride away, it is one of the island's most popular tourist attractions, offering a unique combination of history, wildlife, and natural beauty.
Although a prison was built by the British in 1893, it was never used to hold prisoners. Instead, the island served as a quarantine station for travelers with suspected infectious diseases before they entered Zanzibar. Today, the restored buildings provide visitors with insight into the island's colonial history.
The island is home to the famous Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are over 100 years old. Originally gifted from the Seychelles, these gentle giants are protected in a conservation sanctuary where visitors can observe and feed them.
