Description
Begin your day by exploring Stone Town, the historical heart of Zanzibar City. Wander through its labyrinthine alleys, bustling markets, and admire the distinctive architecture that reflects a blend of Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European influences. Visit key attractions like the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, the Sultan's Palace Museum, and the Old Slave Market, gaining insights into the island's complex past.
Next, take a short boat ride to Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island. Originally intended as a prison in the late 19th century and later used as a quarantine hospital, the island is now famous for its population of Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are over 100 years old. Interact with and feed these ancient creatures, enjoy the island's white sandy beaches, and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the coral reefs. The island also offers picturesque views of Stone Town.
Finally, head to Jozani Forest, part of the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, Zanzibar's only national park. This sanctuary is home to the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkeys, known for their playful behavior and distinctive calls. Observe these rare primates up close and explore the diverse ecosystems within the forest, including swamp forests, evergreen thickets, and mangrove boardwalks. The park also hosts other wildlife such as blue monkeys and elephant shrews. Knowledgeable guides provide information on the forest's ecosystem and conservation efforts.
