Description

Prison Island Tour – Full Experience The Prison Island Tour is one of Zanzibar’s most popular half-day excursions, offering a unique mix of history, nature, and coastal beauty. Known locally as Changuu Island, it is located about 20–30 minutes by boat from Stone Town. Despite its name, the island was never actually used as a prison; it was originally intended for that purpose but later served as a quarantine station for yellow fever cases in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Highlights of the Tour: Giant Aldabra Tortoise Sanctuary One of the main attractions is the giant tortoise sanctuary, home to dozens of Aldabra tortoises — some over 150 years old. These tortoises were gifted by the Seychelles government and have since become a symbol of the island. Visitors can feed and interact with these gentle creatures in a protected environment. ️ Historic Ruins & Island Walk Explore the old prison and quarantine buildings, many of which still stand and offer a glimpse into the island’s colonial past. A guided walk provides context about the island’s history, architecture, and its role in maritime quarantine during outbreaks Snorkeling & Beach Time The waters surrounding Prison Island are crystal-clear and rich with marine life, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling. Coral reefs, tropical fish, and even starfish are commonly seen. After snorkeling, enjoy time to swim, sunbathe, or simply relax on the white sandy beaches. Scenic Views & Photography The island offers beautiful views of Stone Town in the distance and the turquoise Indian Ocean all around. It’s a great spot for photography, especially during sunrise or early morning trips.
