Description

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a small island about 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Despite its name, the island was never used as a prison for criminals. It was originally used as a prison for rebellious slaves in the 1860s. Later, in the 1890s, the British built a prison on the island, but it was used as a quarantine station for yellow fever patients instead of a penal colony. Things to see and do 1. Aldabra giant tortoises – One of the main attractions of Prison Island are the Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are over 200 years old. These turtles were brought as a gift from the Seychelles at the end of the 19th century century as a gift from the Seychelles and are now a popular tourist attraction. 2. Historic prison ruins – The remains of the 19th century prison can be visited and offer insights into the island's colonial past. 3. Snorkeling and marine life – The waters around Prison Island are clear and full of marine life, making the island an ideal place for snorkeling. Visitors can discover colorful coral reefs and a variety of tropical fish. 4. White sandy beaches – The island has beautiful sandy beaches that are perfect for relaxing and sunbathing. 5. Panoramic views of Stone Town – From the island, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of Stone Town and the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Where to meet: For hotel guests: We'll pick you up from your hotel in Stone Town (included). For non-hotel guests: meet at the Cape Town Fishmarket in Stone Town. Where we're heading from: Stone Town Beach (near Forodhani Gardens), Zanzibar ⏳ Duration: About 3 hours Departure times: Morning tour: 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Afternoon tour: 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM End point: Return to Stone Town Beach or hotel transfer (if booked).

  • Turtle reserve: Visitors can see the Aldabra giant tortoises up close. Please respect their habitat and follow the guide's instructions. Swimming & snorkeling: If you want to swim or snorkel, bring your own gear or rent it on site. Nature conservation rules: Please don't touch or disturb any marine life or corals while snorkeling. What to bring: sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, comfortable shoes, and a camera for great photos! Weather conditions: In case of bad weather, the tour may be postponed for safety reasons.
