Description

Begin your journey with a dhow ride from the shores of Matemwe or other northeastern beaches, heading towards the distant silhouette of Mnemba Island. This private island, ringed by a coral atoll, is a federally protected marine conservation area, allowing its ecosystem to thrive with extraordinary vitality. Slip beneath the warm, crystalline surface of the Indian Ocean and enter an underwater metropolis teeming with life. The coral gardens here are among the healthiest in Zanzibar, a sprawling metropolis of hard and soft corals forming intricate structures that provide shelter and sustenance to an incredible diversity of species. Float weightlessly and be overwhelmed by a kaleidoscope of color: schools of electric-blue damselfish, neon-yellow trumpetfish, hovering parrotfish crunching on coral, and the elusive, fluttering lionfish with its venomous, graceful spines. With luck, you might also spot playful bottlenose dolphins riding the bow of your boat or even a harmless reef shark patrolling the deeper drop-offs. Following the exhilaration of the open ocean, visit the Mnarani Natural Aquarium in Nungwi. Wade into the clear, knee-to-waist-deep water and interact with these magnificent creatures up close. Feed them their favorite meal—sea grass—and watch them swim right to you, their ancient, wise eyes regarding you with calm curiosity. After the sensory richness of the ocean and the lagoon, relax on the world-renowned Nungwi Beach. Located on the northernmost tip of Zanzibar, Nungwi has earned its reputation for breathtaking beauty. The sand here is not merely white; it is a fine, powdered sugar-like expanse that feels cool and soft underfoot, even at the height of the day. The ocean reveals itself in every conceivable shade of blue, from a pale, crystalline turquoise at the shore to a deep, profound sapphire at the reef line. Unlike beaches on the east coast which are dramatically affected by the tides, Nungwi’s depth ensures it remains swimmable and stunningly beautiful throughout the day.
