Description

Begin your adventure with a visit to Jozani Forest, home to the iconic Zanzibar red colobus monkeys. These endangered primates are found only in Zanzibar and are known for their distinctive red, black, and white fur. With approximately 5,000 red colobus monkeys residing in Jozani Forest, it’s an excellent place to observe them up close. Unlike other monkeys, they are generally relaxed around humans, allowing for great photo opportunities. Besides red colobus monkeys, you might also spot Sykes' monkeys, bush babies (though nocturnal and difficult to see during the day), and over 40 species of birds. The forest also harbors small antelopes like the Aders' duiker and suni antelope, though they are very shy and rare to spot. Take a guided walk through the forest and learn about the unique plant species, cultural beliefs, and conservation efforts. The forest features towering mahogany and eucalyptus trees, some over 100 years old, and various plants with medicinal benefits. Following the forest exploration, continue to the Pete-Jozani Mangrove Boardwalk. This wooden pathway winds through a mangrove forest, an important ecosystem that protects Zanzibar’s coastline and provides a habitat for marine life, including tiny black crabs, lizards, snakes, and birds. Guides explain the different types of mangroves and their ecological significance. After the Jozani Forest experience, visit UWEMAJO Reptile Park (also known as Zala Park). Located about 5.5 km south of Jozani Park, Zala Park is a nature reserve specifically for reptiles. While the provided content doesn’t detail specific reptiles at UWEMAJO, reptile parks typically showcase a variety of snakes, lizards, tortoises, and other cold-blooded creatures, offering a different perspective on Zanzibar’s wildlife. End of the excursion.
