Description

Stone Town or City Tour takes you to the capital of Zanzibar Island to discover the unique character of its cosmopolitan Swahili culture, infused with Arab, Indian, European, and Portuguese influences. Stone Town is characterized by beautiful historic buildings, remarkable curved Zanzibari gates, sumptuous balconies, and some of the world's most enchanting narrow streets. Zanzibar's World Heritage Site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Like David Livingstone, you'll have the opportunity to explore the island, visiting the House of Wonders, the Freddie Mercury Museum, the Sultan's Palace, the former Slave Market, the French Catholic Cathedral (Notre-Dame de Zanzibar), Forodhani Gardens, the old Portuguese Fort, the Anglican Cathedral, the Tip Tip Houses, the City Market (established in 1904), and much more. During our visit to Stone Town, we'll begin at the former slave market (now the Anglican Church), where we'll have the opportunity to trace the history of the slave trade in East Africa and discover the footsteps of the world-renowned explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, and other missionaries. Next, we'll head to the breathtaking Darajani Market, a vibrant market of fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, and spices, where you'll have the chance to shop for, sample, photograph, and admire the fresh catch from the Indian Ocean, as well as a wide variety of fruits, spices, and vegetables from local Zanzibar growers. Afterward, we'll stroll through the narrow streets of Stone Town to the Zanzibar Coffee House, where you can relax and enjoy a cup of aromatic coffee of your choice. The tour continues to the Sultan's Palace, where you'll have the opportunity to learn about the history of the Zanzibar Sultanate and explore the atmosphere within the majestic palace. Forodhani Garden is a popular spot where locals sell mouthwatering seafood, sugarcane juice, barbecues, Zanzibari pizza, and much more. The next stop is the House of Wonders (Bait el-Ajab), the tallest building in East Africa, a ceremonial palace steeped in mysterious history. Leave nothing but your footprints on the way to the Old Arabic Fort, a structure hastily erected in Stone Town that has served as a battle arena, a famous early railway station, and more. The tour continues on foot to the homes of Freddie Mercury, the singer, songwriter, frontman, and guitarist of the rock band Queen.where you will have the opportunity to hear his story and take photos near the house where he was born. Finally, we will visit the French Catholic Cathedral (Notre Dame de Zanzibar), a beautifully sculpted church in the heart of Stone Town, steeped in history. The tour will continue with a stroll through the narrow streets of Stone Town, discovering the Zanzibar Gates and browsing the many souvenir shops and boutiques. You will then return to your pick-up location where the driver will be waiting, or to your hotel.
