Description

Explore the Ngezi Forest Reserve, a protected area on the northernmost point of Pemba Island. Covering approximately 1,476 hectares, this lush forest is one of the last remaining areas of primary forest that once covered western Pemba. It resembles the highland rainforests of East Africa more than the lowland forests found on Zanzibar. Admire the forest’s double canopy with towering trees like mgulele, mwavi, mtondoo, and mvule, reaching heights of up to 40 meters. Discover various endemic species, including the Pemba Flying Fox, a bat species found only on Pemba Island, as well as endemic bird species like the Pemba sunbirds, green pigeon, and scops owl. Then journey to the historic Ras Kigomasha Lighthouse, located on the northwest tip of Pemba Island. Built in 1904 by ‘The Chance Brothers Limited’ from Birmingham under the British Colonial Government, this lighthouse stands out with its unique corrugated iron structure, unlike other stone or brick lighthouses in Zanzibar Next, head to Vumawimbi Beach, a stunning stretch of white sand beach located on the east side of the Ngezi peninsula, flanked by a pristine forest. This hidden gem is untouched by mass tourism, offering a serene atmosphere and breathtaking views. Relax on the beach, take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters, or snorkel in the ocean. The beach is accessible by a 15-minute boat ride from the Manta Resort, where you can also enjoy a delicious seafood lunch.
