Description

We will pick you up from your hotel or residence in Arusha or Moshi and drive to Lake Chala. Lake Chala is a volcanic crater lake that straddles the border of Kenya and Tanzania to the east of Mount Kilimanjaro. The lake formed around 250,000 years ago. Nearly 80% of the lake's water comes from groundwater coming primarily from rainfall in the montane forest zone of Kilimanjaro. The only native fish in the lake is the Lake Chala tilapia which is found nowhere else on earth. At Lake Chala you will have the opportunity to hike to the border rock and have one foot in Kenya and another in Tanzania (approximately a 3-4 hour hike). There are shorter hikes available. There is also the opportunity for kayaking on the lake to explore the amazing environment from the water. You can do either activity or both. Lunch will be provided from a pavilion with amazing views of the lake.
