Description

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut (2,700m) Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where registration is done and porters prepare the trek. The trail winds through thick rainforest filled with colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and exotic birds. After a scenic 4–5 hour hike, you arrive at Mandara Hut for your first night on the mountain. Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m) Leaving the forest, the landscape changes into open moorland with giant heathers and volcanic rock formations. On clear days, views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks appear in the distance. After 6–7 hours of trekking, you reach Horombo Hut, where you spend the night in cozy mountain lodges. Day 3: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut (Optional hike to Zebra Rocks) This is a vital acclimatization day. You enjoy a scenic hike to Zebra Rocks or the base of Mawenzi Peak, gaining altitude before descending back to Horombo. This day improves your chances of successfully reaching the summit while giving you more time to explore the mountain’s beauty. Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m) The trail climbs steadily into the alpine desert. The air is thinner, and the landscapes are stark yet spectacular. After 6–7 hours, you arrive at Kibo Hut at the base of the summit. Dinner is early, followed by rest to prepare for your midnight ascent. Day 5: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then descend to Horombo Hut Your toughest yet most rewarding day begins before dawn. Under a sky filled with stars, you ascend steep switchbacks to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim, continue past Stella Point (5,739m), and finally reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue to Horombo Hut for the night. Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate The final descent takes you back through moorland and rainforest, a chance to reflect on the incredible journey. At Marangu Gate, you receive your summit certificate before heading back to Moshi or Arusha for relaxation. This Marangu Route itinerary is unique because it blends rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glaciers in just six days, while offering hut accommodations for extra comfort and a smoother acclimatization process.
