Explore the ruins which consist of 30 tombs and the oldest mosque in East Africa. Bear witness to the reminders of Bagamoyo's past. Visit the prison where slaves were held captive during the slave and ivory trade. The word Bwagamoyo means “Here I throw down my heart,” reflecting the despair of those who would never return to Africa. See the relics of the colonial era at the Old Boma, a statehouse constructed by the Germans in 1897 and later taken over by the British after the first world war. Later, walk among the tombs of German leaders who perished during the First World War. Trace the roots of Christianity in Bagamoyo with the Catholic Museum, the former resting place of the famous explorer Dr. Livingstone.
