Learn the story of the ancient Arab town of Kaole that was forced into decline by the arrival of the Portuguese in the 15th century. Explore the ruins which consist of 30 tombs and the oldest mosque in East Africa. Bear witness to the reminders of Bagamoyo's past. Visit the prison where slaves were held captive during the slave and ivory trade. The word Bwagamoyo means “Here I throw down my heart,” reflecting the despair of those who would never return to Africa.
