Description

This 7-day Machame Route trek offers diverse landscapes—rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic zones. It emphasizes acclimatization (via Lava Tower and Karanga days), ensuring a safer, higher summit success rate. The toughest section is the overnight summit push from Barafu to Uhuru Peak, followed by a long descent. Day 0: Arrival in Moshi/Arusha Pickup from Kilimanjaro or Arusha airport (if transfers are arranged). Pre-trek briefing at your hotel in Moshi/Arusha. Gear review and rental if needed. Arrive at least one day before trek start. Day 1: Machame Gate → Machame Camp Elevation: 5,400 ft → 9,400 ft Distance: 11 km (5–7 hrs) Habitat: Rainforest Drive from Arusha via Machame village to park gate. Trek through lush rainforest on a muddy, slippery trail. Overnight at Machame Camp. Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp Elevation: 9,400 ft → 12,500 ft Distance: 5 km (4–6 hrs) Habitat: Moorland Steady ascent from rainforest glades to a rocky ridge and river gorge. Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp. Day 3: Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp Elevation: 12,500 ft → 13,000 ft (via 16,000 ft at Lava Tower) Distance: 10 km (6–8 hrs) Habitat: Semi-desert Trek east to Lava Tower (“Shark’s Tooth”) for high-altitude acclimatization. Descend to Barranco Camp at 13,000 ft. Critical day for altitude adjustment. Day 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp Elevation: 13,000 ft → 13,100 ft Distance: 5 km (4–5 hrs) Habitat: Alpine Desert Climb the steep Barranco Wall, then descend into Karanga Valley. Short trek designed mainly for acclimatization. Overnight at Karanga Camp. Day 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp Elevation: 13,100 ft → 15,300 ft Distance: 4 km (4–5 hrs) Habitat: Alpine Desert Join the Mweka Trail junction and ascend to Barafu Camp. Final base before summit push; views of Mawenzi and Kibo. Rest and early dinner in preparation for summit night. Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp Elevation: 15,300 ft → 19,345 ft (summit) → 10,000 ft Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent Time: 7–8 hrs ascent / 4–6 hrs descent Habitat: Arctic Midnight–2 am start, ascending steep scree toward Stella Point (18,600 ft). Witness sunrise from Stella Point or Uhuru Peak (summit of Africa). Descend back via Barafu (lunch stop) to Mweka Camp for overnight. Day 7: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Arusha Elevation: 10,000 ft → 5,400 ft Distance: 10 km (3–4 hrs) Habitat: Rainforest Final descent through wet, muddy trail. Collect summit certificates at park gate. Continue to Mweka village, then transfer to hotel in Arusha.
