Moving North: As the dry season progresses, the herds move north, followed by zebras and gazelles, in search of higher green grass. River Crossings: A defining feature of the migration is the perilous river crossing, where thousands of wildebeest plunge into rivers filled with crocodiles, resulting in high casualties from drowning and predation. Heading South: With the onset of the short rains in late October, the herds begin their journey south again, making their way back towards the Serengeti's calving grounds.
